She is where they used to be.
Wastelands.
Their world of mountains and forests has melted into rivers,
leading to new oceans.
Left are empty fields of memories, which once bloomed in the
sun.
It’s just him and it’s just her now.
Flowers in empty gardens.
01 Please introduce yourself
I‘m Maya and I live in Berlin at the moment. It’s my base for now but I‘m trying to travel around as much as possible to find a place that really clicks with me and inspires me. Tokyo really did, I hope I‘ll be back soon.
02 How did you start photography/ fashion photography?
I started taking pictures when I was 13, with an old camera I borrowed from a friend of my dad. I just took it to school and took portraits and snapshots of my favorite people.
My friend Thalia, who was my muse until we graduated and moved to different cities, was always down to bring my creative ideas to life. At some point all of my pictures were of her.
My interest in fashion photography started once I moved to Berlin and I met one of my now best friends. She was in this friend group of fashion people and through her I got some insight into the industry and it really sparked an interest.
There‘s something really special about working with other highly motivated creatives in a team. When visions align, it’s something very rewarding.
03 What inspired your style of art work? Is there a significant person/artwork that inspired you?
My dad went to film school and he taught me the classics and aesthetics of photography/cinematography. He pretty much forced me to study Ansel Adams. It’s a bit weird because he‘s mostly doing nature photography and all of it is black and white. But he‘s a master of light and contrast. I try to do most of my shoots in natural light. I think he‘s one of the inspirations.
Bettina Rheims was the first photographer I discovered myself. And I got obsessed with her work. I love how she portrays women and isn’t scared of being provocative. You can feel their personalities through the images. That’s magic for me. I learned a lot through her work.
My current inspiration is a really good friend of mine. He got me into 35mm photography and it’s been a game changer ever since.
04 What is your focus of the series “I’m not in love”?
It’s the feeling of finding an old photograph of a person you once were really close to. Its a little snippet of a world, where you once lived in but now have moved on from. It brings up a lot of emotions. I love the feeling of nostalgia. So that’s what I tried to capture. The absence of something that once was.
05 What is the next project?
I really want to work with actors more. Their skills and confidence when it comes to self expression is something I really admire and love to see in front of the camera. To not put a role on them, no staging, just to let them show whatever they want in that specific moment. It’s gonna be something with actors.

私の名前はマヤです。今はベルリンに住んでいます。今のところベルリンが私の拠点ですが、できるだけあちこちを旅して、本当にピンとくる場所、インスピレーションを与えてくれる場所を見つけたいと思っています。東京は本当に素晴らしかった。
02 写真／ファッション写真を始めたきっかけは？
13歳のときに、父の友人から借りた古いカメラで写真を撮り始めたの。学校に持っていって、好きな人のポートレートやスナップ写真を撮っていました。
卒業して別の街に引っ越すまで、私のミューズだった友人のタリアは、いつも私の創造的なアイデアを実現するために尽力してくれた。いつしか私の写真はすべて彼女の写真になっていた。
ファッション写真に興味を持ち始めたのは、ベルリンに引っ越して、今の親友の一人に出会ってからだ。彼女はファッション関係者の友人グループで、彼女を通して私はこの業界についての見識を深め、興味を持つようになった。
モチベーションの高いクリエーターたちとチームを組んで仕事をするのは、本当に特別なことだ。ビジョンが一致したとき、とてもやりがいを感じます。
03 あなたのアートスタイルに影響を与えたものは何ですか？あなたに影響を与えた重要な人物や作品はありますか？
父は映画学校に通っていて、写真／映画撮影の古典と美学を教えてくれた。アンセル・アダムスを勉強するように強く勧められた。彼は主に自然写真を撮っていて、すべてモノクロだから、ちょっと変な感じだよね。でも、彼は光とコントラストの達人。私はほとんどの撮影を自然光で行うようにしている。彼はインスピレーションの源だと思う。
Bettina Rheimsは、私が最初に出会った写真家で、彼女の作品に夢中になった。挑発的であることを恐れない、彼女の女性像が大好きです。画像を通して彼女たちの個性を感じることができる。それは私にとっての魔法です。彼女の作品を通して多くのことを学びました。
今の私のインスピレーション源は、本当に親友なんだ。彼が私を35mm写真に導いてくれて、それ以来、人生が大きく変わりました。
04 「I’m not in love」シリーズでフォーカスしているものは何ですか？
かつて本当に親しかった人の古い写真を見つけたときの感覚です。かつて住んでいたけれど、今は離れてしまった世界の小さな断片。それは多くの感情を呼び起こす。私はノスタルジーの感覚が大好きだから、かつてあったものの不在を捉えようとしていると思います。
05 次のプロジェクトは？
演者ともっと仕事がしたい。自己表現に対する彼らのスキルと自信は、私が本当に尊敬し、カメラの前で見るのが大好きなものです。役柄を押し付けず、演出もせず、ただその瞬間に好きなものを見せてもらう。そんな彼らと一緒に何かできるかもしれないと思います。
