Originally from Portugal and now based in Tokyo, multimedia artist Ema Gaspar sits down with Burning Magazine to share her deep love for nature and the importance of creating safe spaces, and the show she is having at the store, Season in Tokyo in April.

Born in Portugal and now based in Tokyo, Ema is a versatile artist and illustrator whose work spans across illustration, painting, ceramics, art direction, and animation. With a deep-rooted passion for creativity, Ema has recently delved into the world of ceramics, expanding her artistic vocabulary. Her unique style and innovative approach have caught the attention of some of the biggest names in the industry, including Nike, Mura Masa, The New York Times, Heaven by Marc Jacobs, Levi’s, Magic: The Gathering, Brain Dead, Melanie Martinez, Gracie Abrams, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music. What is your biggest inspiration for your artwork?
Safe places – this changes the same way I change each year. But the sense of comfort and safety is always something I seek, something I need to create and be creative. There’s a sense of longing I’ve had since childhood, and I think that’s why I was, in a way, forced to be creative – to build my own safe places. Right now, nature is my safe place.

What is your obsession at the moment?
Mochi, talking to flowers, crying, and learning how to cook in a fun way. Mostly, I’m finally learning what my hobbies are.

You seem like you travel a lot (you were in Portugal and Japan?). Where is your favorite place? And give me short reasons!
I love traveling! Last year, I had a working holiday in Japan, then I went back to Portugal to prepare for my show in Paris. After that, I got an artist visa for Japan- so here I am now! I love Kyushu’s nature, but I could never trade the deep, full nights spent talking at my friends’ houses or the warmth of my grandparents’ home. Those would be my favorite places.

Do you have a next goal or dream?
Yes! Right now, I’m studying and preparing to start a garden drawing club. Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck inspires me a lot! I want to give something back to the community and be present in nature with people.

Where do you spend time when you have time for yourself, to relax, or refresh? (City, type of place, anywhere?)
Being alone while traveling, being in nature, parks, or kissaten. But mostly, I’m learning how to be alone and truly relax.

 あなたのアートワークのインスピレーションは何ですか？

安心する空間 – これは私が毎年変わるのと同じように変わる。でも、安らぎや安全という感覚は、常に私が求めるものであり、創作やクリエイティブであるために必要なものです。子供の頃から抱いていた憧れのようなものがあって、だからこそ、ある意味、創造的であることを余儀なくされたのだと思います。今は、自然が私の安心する場所です。

 今、夢中になっていることは何ですか？

お餅、お花と話すこと、泣くこと、楽しく料理を学ぶこと。自分の趣味が何なのかようやく分かってきたところです。

あなたはよく旅行をしているようですね（ポルトガルと日本にいました？） お気に入りの場所はどこですか？

旅は大好きです！去年は日本でワーキングホリデーをした後、パリでのショーの準備のためにポルトガルに戻りました。その後、日本のアーティストビザを取得したので、今日本にいます！九州の自然も大好きですが、友人宅で語らう深くて充実した夜や、祖父母の家の暖かさには、決して代えられません。それが私のお気に入りの場所です。

次の目標はありますか？

はい！今は、ガーデンドローイングクラブを立ち上げるために勉強と準備をしています。ヨハンナ・タガダ・ホフベックにとても刺激を受けています！地域社会に何かを還元したいし、自然の中で人々と一緒にいたいです。

自分の時間があるとき、リラックスしたいとき、リフレッシュしたいときはどこで過ごしますか？

旅行中にひとりになること、自然の中、公園、喫茶店。でも今は、ひとりになって心からリラックスする方法を学んでいます。

“Flower’s Nest,” at Season in Tokyo from April 6–30. The opening day, April 6, also marks the store’s one-year anniversary!
This exhibition is a collaboration with baker @youei_suzuki, who will create sweets inspired by the show, leading to a playful game to find them. 

The theme explores the secret world of flowers that exist at Season store, a reflection of how I communicate with them to understand their personalities – imagining what brands and styles they would wear, all available at Season. 

東京のSeasonで「Flower’s Nest」4/6〜4/30まで展示をします。初日の 4/6 は開店1周年記念日でもあります！ この展覧会は、パン屋さんの@youei_suzukiさんとのコラボレーションで、@youei_suzukiさんが展覧会にちなんだお菓子を作り、それを探すという遊び心いっぱいの展覧会です。

テーマは、Seasonの店内に存在する花々の秘密の世界を探ることです。花々の個性を理解するために、私がどのように花々とコミュニケーションをとっているかどんなブランドやスタイルを身につけるか想像します。すべてSeasonで購入できます。
