Rita Vie, a contributing artist featured in BURNING MAGAZINE Issue 03 (2024), recently shared her latest video last month.
For this online feature, we delve into her artistic journey and creative process. In an exclusive interview, Rita discusses how she transforms simplicity into captivating artwork, reflects on her primary influences—MTV and the early 2000s—shares insights into her coffee ritual, and reveals the process of her work.

I love your new work Rita! What was your motive of creating this ?
What I admire most in the artists I look up to is the ability to make something
captivating out of simplicity. It’s easy to grab attention with loud, dramatic
gestures, but for something simple to truly reach you, it has to be deeply moving.
I’ve been challenging myself to achieve, which is why I chose daily routine as the
topic for my latest video.
I love the edit and color, really showing your style and Rita’s artistic
world!! What do you think is biggest inspiration for your video work ?
Thank you so much! I think my background in painting has a big influence on how
I create moods in my videos. Color is essential: it can either make or break a
video, in my opinion. Since I’ve been trained to think about color in a very
intentional way, it naturally become a part of my creative process.
My aesthetic inspiration had a humble start, actually. The first time I felt drawn to
filmmaking was after watching MTV music videos in the early 2000’s. When I was
13, I decided that’s what I wanted to do — and got myself a mini DV camcorder!
And the visuals of that era stayed with me to this day.
What’s on your mind lately ?
I’ve been wanting to create memory-based videos, something like a vlog or a
diary, but focused on past experiences. I’m currently working on a video about a
concert I went to that really sparked my creativity. But instead of making just a
vlog of the show, I’m taking a more personal and introspective approach —
reflecting on art, music, and creativity in a broader sense. I’m really excited about
it!
Do you actually make coffee and leave it ? (It gets cold afterward) I do it often haha
Yes, it’s true! Ahaha. I think a big part about drinking coffee has a lot to do with
the ritual. It’s not just about the caffeine — when you prepare it in the morning,
you’re sending a signal to your body to prepare for the day.
And sometimes, your personal rhythm just doesn’t align with the time the coffee
naturally stays hot. There are times when I’m so impatient, I burn my tongue! But
most of the times, I slowly let it cool to room temperature. It’s almost like I’m letting
the coffee acclimate to the day ahead.
How long did it take for you to finish this video work ?
In practical terms, it took about a week to film and edit. But I’ve working on the
idea for quite a while, actually. That really helps mature the concepts I want to
bring forth. There’s a poem that goes: ‘Be patient; wait for the word to ripen and fall away like a fruit; giving into the wind meant to take it’. I feel like the creative process is a lot like that — you can’t rush it, it has to develop at its own pace.

What’s your favorite things to do lately in Porto ? Did you go somewhere cute lately ?
I recently moved, so I’ve been enjoying spending more time at home! But when I
go out, my favorite thing is going to the movies. I used to go all the time a few
years ago, but I lost that habit. I feel like there’s something really special about
watching a movie in that environment — it fully immerses you in the narrative.
Not only that, Porto has preserved a lot of historical movie theatres, which makes
the experience even more unique. I’ve seen Wicked twice already and I can’t stop
listening to the soundtrack!

私が尊敬するアーティストの中で最も感心するのは、シンプルさの中に魅惑的なものを作る能力です。 シンプルであること。派手でドラマチックなジェスチャーで注目を集めるのは簡単です。 しかし、シンプルなものが真に心に届くためには、深い感動を与えなければならない。 私はそれを達成するために自分自身に挑戦してきました。 それが、最新の作品のテーマに日課を選んだ理由です。
リタのスタイルとアーティスティックな世界がよく表れていて、編集と色使いがとても素敵です！あなたのビデオ作品の最大のインスピレーションは何だと思いますか？
ありがとうございます！私の絵画のバックグラウンドが、作品の雰囲気作りに大きく影響していると思います。 色は不可欠で左右すると思います。意図的に色について考えるように訓練されてきたので、自然に私の創造的なプロセスの一部となってます。 私の美的インスピレーションの始まり実は地味なものなんです。初めて映画製作に惹かれたのは 2000年代初頭にMTVのミュージックビデオを見たのがきっかけでした。私が 13歳のとき、自分がやりたいのはこれだと思い、ミニDVビデオカメラを手に入れてその時代の映像は今まで私の中に残っています。
最近気になっていることは？
思い出をベースにしたビデオを作りたいと思っています。 過去の経験に焦点を当てて、今作っているのは、私が行ったコンサートについてのビデオです。より個人的で内省的なアプローチをとっています。 より広い意味でのアート、音楽、そしてクリエイティビティについて作っています。とても完成が楽しみです！
本当にコーヒーを作って放置してしまうことがありますか？(コーヒーが冷めてしまう）私もよくやります。
ええ、本当にやってしまう！笑 コーヒーを飲むことは、儀式に大きく関係していると思います。カフェインのためではなくて、 一日の準備をするために体に信号を送っているような。 そして時には、個人の飲みたいペースとコーヒー温度のタイミングが合わないこともあります。焦りすぎて舌を火傷することもあります！ですが、大体の場合は、ゆっくりと常温まで冷まします。コーヒーがその日に馴染むように コーヒーをその日のうちに馴染ませるような感じです。
このビデオ作品を完成させるのに、どのくらいの時間がかかりましたか？
撮影と編集に1週間ほどかかりました。でも 実はかなり長い間アイデアを練っていました。そうすることで アイデアを成熟させました。こんな詩があります『忍耐強く、言葉が熟して果実のように落ちるのを待ちます。』創造的なプロセスはそれに似ている気がします。急ぐことはできないし、自分のペースで発展させなければならないです。

ポルトでの最近のお気に入りはありますか？最近どこか、かわいいところに行きましたか？
最近引っ越したので、家で過ごす時間が増えました！でも 外出するときは、映画を観に行くのが一番好きです。数年前まではよく行っていたのですが、その習慣がなくなってしまいました。あの環境で映画を観るのは、本当に特別な感じがしました。 物語にどっぷり浸れる。 それだけではなく、ポルトには歴史的な映画館がたくさん保存されています。 この経験はさらにユニークなものです。『ウィキッド』はもう2回観て、サウンドトラックを聴くのを止められないです！

Rita Vie is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of video, photography, and performance. Through her project oeuvvre, she delves into the complexities of feminist discourse, drawing on personal experiences to explore themes such as body image, identity, and the dynamics of representation on the internet and social media.
Born in Porto in 1991, Rita studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, at the University of Porto.
