South London-born multidisciplinary artist Precious Opara moves fluidly across painting, collage, photography, and drawing—though painting remains her first and deepest love. Guided by the intuitive force of water and emotion, her surrealist work explores the sentience of nature and the unseen worlds within us.

What and what kind of place inspires the most ?

I love being by large bodies of water, seas, lakes and oceans, but I think I would like to visit streams, waterfalls and rivers more. I find them to be more intimate, and they speak to a vulnerability that I would like to explore in the future. I also love being in wide open natural spaces with different heights, they really thrust you into a state of wonder and amazement. I feel it clears the head and gives me a sense of lightness (in a weight sense).

Do you have someone or something who inspired you to create initially?

I don’t think I can pinpoint an exact moment when I knew I loved art because it’s something I’ve always been enveloped in from my earliest memories. I would say the things and people who inspire me the most are visiting fantastical natural landscapes such as a turquoise waterfall in Tuscany, my friends and creative community, Solange Knowles and MUSIC. Music is a constant throughout the creative process, especially soulful genres like gospel, neo-soul, 70s soul, funk and R&B – they tap into something quite emotional and giving that really facilitates a good session in the studio.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m quite adamant about being a slow painter while being an ambitious one. I’ve been considering the function of scale choice in my work, and that may make the experience more immersive, so I’m currently working on the biggest painting I’ve worked on so far. It’s early days but I am embracing the challenge and constantly putting myself in the viewer’s seat to see if that feeling is there. This is new for me so it’s a test and an opportunity at the same time, so I am going at a pace that is intentional and not pressured – if I am happy with what it becomes, then maybe you’ll see it one day.

私の名前はプレシャス・オパラ。サウスロンドン生まれ・在住のマルチ ディシプリナリー アーティストです。コラージュ、ドローイング、写真、絵画など幅広く表現していますが、絵画は私の一番の愛です。太陽星座は牡羊座、月星座は乙女座。だからいつも簡単ではないけれど、たいてい楽しい性格です！

絵画表現における主なテーマは何ですか？
水が持つ感情の伝達役としての可能性に強くインスピレーションを受けています。水は実体が曖昧であるがゆえに、感情との親和性を感じます。感情は形がないにもかかわらず、私たちや世界に大きな影響を与える、その性質が水ととても似ていると感じました。水と人間が分子構造を共有していることから、このつながりをさらに探求するようになりました。

シュルレアリスム的な絵画、そして最近では彫刻を通じて、水の中に意思や感覚を認める表現をしています。水という存在が、空間であり、教師であり、感情として人間の身体と対話する主体となる。そういった想像の中で作品を制作しています。

どんな場所や風景にインスピレーションを感じますか？
大きな水辺、海や湖、海洋のそばにいることが大好きです。でも、もっと小さな川や滝、小川などにも今後は訪れてみたいと思っています。それらはより親密で、繊細さや脆さを感じさせてくれる。これから深く探りたいテーマです。

また、高低差のある広大な自然空間にも魅了されます。そうした場所に立つと、驚きと感動で頭がクリアになり、身体が軽くなるような感覚になります。

創作を始めたきっかけとなる人や出来事はありますか？
明確な「これがきっかけ」という瞬間はないのですが、幼いころから常にアートが身近にありました。初期の記憶の中から、ずっとアートに包まれていたという感覚があります。

私にインスピレーションを与えてくれる存在としては、トスカーナで見たターコイズ色の滝のような幻想的な自然風景、友人たちや創造的なコミュニティ、ソランジュ・ノウルズ、そして音楽。音楽は創作のすべての過程で常にそばにあります。ゴスペル、ネオソウル、70年代ソウル、ファンク、R&Bなど感情の深いところに触れるジャンルが特に好きで、創作の時間をとても豊かにしてくれます。

現在取り組んでいる作品はありますか？
私は「ゆっくり描く」ことにこだわりながらも、「野心的である」ことも大切にしています。最近は、作品のスケールが持つ意味について考えるようになり、それによって鑑賞体験がより没入的になるのではないかと感じています。今はこれまでで一番大きな絵に取り組んでいるところです。

まだ始まったばかりですが、挑戦を楽しみながら、常に「鑑賞者の視点」で絵を見直しています。これは私にとって新しい試みであり、同時にテストでもありチャンスでもあります。だからこそ、意図を持ちながらもプレッシャーを感じすぎないペースで進めています。もし自分の納得いく作品になれば、いつか皆さんにも見ていただけるかもしれません。
