Earlier this summer in Palermo, Sicily, I met Azzurra—a photographer with a striking sense of freedom who rides a scooter. We first crossed paths at a small bar near the station, where I ate an arancini and she ordered something sweet. Our time together was brief but vivid: a ride along the seaside and up the mountain roads, the rush of traffic where people nearly collided, a chaos that somehow felt both frightening and alive with inspiration.

As we rode, we spoke about our lives and the creative work we each pursue, and how to exist within a system that often feels impossible. We reflected on the need to sometimes adapt for survival, even while resisting the wrongness of capitalism. What stayed with me most was her way of being—unapologetic, real, and full of presence. I invited her to share some of her work with Burning Magazine, and within hours after we said goodbye to each other, she sent me a series that carried the same spirit: raw beauty, natural bodies, and an attitude that embodies freedom.

この初夏、シチリア・パレルモでAzzurraに出会った。スクーターに乗り、美しい写真を撮る彼女。駅近くの小さなエスプレッソバーで落ち合い、私はアランチーニを、彼女は甘いものを注文した。わずかな時間だったけれど、海辺や山道をバイクで走り抜け、すれ違う車や人々の荒々しいやり取りを目の当たりにした。*（パレルモは交通があまり整備されていなくてみんな自由に運転する）怖さと同時に、むしろ生々しいエネルギーを感じて心を揺さぶられた。

道中で話したのは、私たちの人生や創作について、そして資本主義社会に押しつぶされずにどう生きていくかということ。システムの不条理を知りながらも、ときには「良い生活」のために馴染まざるを得ない―そんな現実の中で、それでも彼女の存在の仕方に強く心を打たれた。自然体で、偽らず、自由であること。その在り方に感化されて、Burning Magazineに作品を送って欲しいとお願いした。さよならした数時間後、彼女が送ってくれたシリーズには、まさにその精神が宿っていた。ありのままの美しさ、自然な身体表現、そして自由を体現する態度。それこそが私が彼女から受け取った力だった。

Azzurra’s work carries the same force as her way of living: refusing to be diminished, embracing presence, and using the body as a vessel to connect with the world. Her photographs are not only images but also a reminder that freedom begins with how we inhabit ourselves.

As she writes

“In Palermo, beneath the silent gaze of La Zisa, the body becomes the language of the story I wanted to tell.

The body in its movements is freedom, yet so often it is seen as a cage, something merely material. In truth it is the instrument through which we live the world, the vessel through which our soul is present in the empirical realm. Through the senses, through the soma, we touch what surrounds us, yet we also reach beyond matter, towards what cannot be touched.

The body should be cared for, and it can be revealed if one chooses. It is one of the purest means we have to understand who we truly are. Here the body breathes alongside the city, its warmth, its colors, its silences, until they become one and the same.”

Her words linger as both a philosophy and a practice: the body as language, the city as witness, and freedom as the act of being.

Azzurraの作品には、彼女の生き方そのものが宿っている。押し潰されることを拒み、存在を肯定し、身体を通して世界とつながる力。その写真は単なるイメージではなく、自由とはまず「自分の身体をどう生きるか」から始まることを思い出させてくれる。

彼女はこう言う、

「パレルモで、La Zisaの静かなまなざしの下、身体は私が語りたかった物語の言語となる。

動きの中にある身体は自由だ。けれどもしばしば、檻として、ただの物質として見られてしまう。本当は、私たちが世界を生きるための道具であり、魂が経験的な現実に存在するための器なのに。感覚、身体を通して、私たちは身のまわりに触れると同時に、触れられないものへと手を伸ばす。

身体は大切にされるべきだし、望めばさらけ出すこともできる。私たちが本当に誰であるかを理解する、もっとも純粋な手段のひとつ。ここでは身体が街とともに呼吸し、その温度、色、沈黙とひとつになる。」

その言葉は思想であると同時に実践でもある。身体は言語であり、街はその証人となり、自由とは「存在する」という行為そのものなのだ。
